It was bedtime in Maya's house. Maya had brushed her teeth, put on her purple pyjamas, and climbed into bed next to her toy rabbit. Outside the window, the moon was round and bright. A small, friendly face peeked over the windowsill. It was Pip the fox, Maya's best friend. "Are you awake?" asked Pip. "Something has happened.""The fireflies have lost their lantern," said Pip. "Without it, they can't find their way home to the old oak tree." Maya sat up straight. "Then let's help them look." Maya put on her slippers and followed Pip across the garden, through the gate, and along the mossy path into the Whispering Woods. The air smelled of pine needles and rain.At last Maya noticed something shining under a curly fern. It was the lantern, glowing a gentle purple. Maya lifted it up high, and one by one the fireflies flew towards the light and followed it home. The old oak tree rustled its branches, as if to say thank you.Pip walked Maya all the way home. Maya climbed back into bed, warm and cosy, with her toy rabbit close by. "Goodnight, Pip," whispered Maya. "Goodnight, Maya," said Pip. "See you tomorrow night." And soon Maya was fast asleep.
