It was bedtime in Maya's house. Maya had brushed her teeth, put on her purple pyjamas, and climbed into bed next to her toy rabbit. Outside the window, the moon was round and bright. A small, friendly face peeked over the windowsill. It was Pip the fox, Maya's best friend. "Are you awake?" asked Pip. "Something has happened.""Baby Crab has lost the shell she sleeps in," said Pip. "She's looked everywhere, and now she's too tired to look any more." "We'll look for her," said Maya. "Four eyes are better than two." Maya and Pip followed the sandy path down to Pebble Bay, where the waves were whispering "shh, shh." Little crabs scuttled sideways and waved their claws hello.Behind a smooth grey rock, Maya found a little shell, just the right size, with a purple stripe around it. Baby Crab tried it on. It fit perfectly. She waved her claws, tucked herself inside, and was asleep before the next wave rolled in.Pip walked Maya all the way home. Maya climbed back into bed, warm and cosy, with her toy rabbit close by. "Goodnight, Pip," whispered Maya. "Goodnight, Maya," said Pip. "See you tomorrow night." And soon Maya was fast asleep.
