It was bedtime in Maya's house. Maya had brushed her teeth, put on her purple pyjamas, and climbed into bed next to her toy rabbit. Outside the window, the moon was round and bright. A small, friendly face peeked over the windowsill. It was Pip the fox, Maya's best friend. "Are you awake?" asked Pip. "Something has happened.""The lighthouse light has gone out," said Pip. "The little boats are coming home, and they won't be able to see the harbour." "Then we'll wake it up," said Maya. Maya and Pip followed the sandy path down to Pebble Bay, where the waves were whispering "shh, shh." The rock pools shone like little mirrors full of stars. They climbed the winding steps, round and round, to the very top of the lighthouse. The lamp was only sleepy. Maya polished the glass until it shone, and the light blinked on, warm and purple. Out on the water, the little boats turned towards the light and sailed safely home.Pip walked Maya all the way home. Maya climbed back into bed, warm and cosy, with her toy rabbit close by. "Goodnight, Pip," whispered Maya. "Goodnight, Maya," said Pip. "See you tomorrow night." And soon Maya was fast asleep.
