Maya and the Sleepy Star

A free bedtime story starring our example hero Maya and her friend Pip the fox. Grown-ups, read it first to decide whether it suits your child tonight.

It was bedtime in Maya's house. Maya had brushed her teeth, put on her purple pyjamas, and climbed into bed next to her toy rabbit. Outside the window, the moon was round and bright. A small, friendly face peeked over the windowsill. It was Pip the fox, Maya's best friend. "Are you awake?" asked Pip. "Something has happened."
"One of the stars has fallen asleep," said Pip. "Without it, the sky has a gap in it, and the night doesn't feel quite right." "Let's go and see," said Maya. Maya and Pip stepped onto a moonbeam, and it carried them gently up, past the rooftops and the treetops and the clouds. Everything up here was still and peaceful.
The little star was curled up on a cloud, snoring the tiniest snore. Maya whispered, "Wake up, little star. The night needs you." The star opened one eye, then the other, and began to glow a soft purple. It floated back to its place in the sky, and the night felt just right again.

Pip walked Maya all the way home. Maya climbed back into bed, warm and cosy, with her toy rabbit close by. "Goodnight, Pip," whispered Maya. "Goodnight, Maya," said Pip. "See you tomorrow night." And soon Maya was fast asleep.
